Shooting food outside is madness! The light is constantly changing, bees are attracted to the carefully drizzled sauces, leaves fall onto the plate at the last moment, flies crawl over everything, the wind blows up at the last moment fliping napkins into the dish, sunny skies spring thunder clouds.... BUT when you get it right, the results are very satisfying. My philosophy is that where you eat food is almost as important as the food itself. Therefore, what makes the food special is that which surrounds it and the feeling of the land, the people, the light, the building style all contribute to the food so should be communicated in the photography. Often it is raining when we shoot a summertime shot. We erect a covering, use flash, add warm filters and increase the contrast, put a half blue filter over the sky while the stylist or chef is struggling with the sauces and embellishments. I leave it to you to judge the sucess. |
