Dr. Leo Buscaglia, a professor at U.C.L.A., became a pop celebrity for a while with his lectures on giving love to others easily expressed by hugging instead of just a hand shake.

He needed a photograph of himself that would be striking but evoke his love of discussion and making close contact not just physically but through force of personality.
