. . . and children are a whole different matter.
In an age when you can get marvelous and inventive photographs of children at "Kids 'R Us", I prefer to capture those natural and unset up moments that children produce quite naturally when they are just being themselves, usually at play. I rather think these are the moments that also carry special memories to parents even if they are excrutiating to the offspring themselves in their teens.
This style is invariably available light and can only really commence once the kids have gotten used to me, the photographer, which can take a little time. Some kids are painfully shy, I was one. Others are natural hams. All are unique. We just work with them until I feel we have a selection of fun shots that capture some of the emerging personality.
Part of this is staying loose and open to designing the photograph. Some close-ups may work best; other times a distance shot speaks more. I like to keep my options open to respond to the child itself.
